“Unite the working class as the core of building a left popular front!”
The SACP in Mpumalanga province convened its ordinary Provincial Working Committee (PWC) plenary session on Monday, 28 January 2019 in Mbombela. The meeting reflected on contemporary political developments and assessed and reviewed the organisational capacity to carry out the constitutional mandate to lead the working class and defend their aspirations. The meeting acknowledged the continued growth of the Party and qualitatively quantitatively.
The PWC emphasised the importance of unity and ideological consistency in the province and nationally as the basis of building a vanguard Party capable of confronting the narrative which projects the neo-liberal intervention by the Bretton Wood’s institution as a solution to our current economic challenges globally.
The meeting congratulated the Young Communist League of South Africa for a successful 5th National Congress held in December 2018. We congratulate the leadership collective and wish them well in their term of office. The challenges lie ahead to represent young people and advance their struggles without fail. The meeting further congratulated the South African National Civic Organisation for a successful national congress.
The meeting observed a moment of silence and paid tribute to the founding General Secretary of the Liberate Metalworkers of South Africa (Limusa), Comrade Cedric Gina who died on Monday 28 January 2019. Comrade Gina has been an inspiration to many young people as he was always on the side of the workers from his shop steward years, to President in the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and later Limusa General Secretary.
Joe Slovo commemorations
The meeting sat after successful national and provincial Joe Slovo commemorative events. As part of honouring this gallant liberation stalwart, our structures have been visiting schools and our districts held remembrance events. In his honour, we must consolidate the unity of the revolutionary alliance both in theory and practice. It is only through a reconfigured alliance where all components will feel part of the thinking and direction of our National Democratic Revolution.
It is important that we develop a common alliance programme to address challenges facing our people and to position this revolutionary alliance as an important instrument of the masses of our people according to the current demands of our revolutionary tasks and activities of our historic alliance.
SACP and the workplace
The PEC congratulated Cosatu for its successful national and provincial congresses convened recently. The federation took significant resolutions that will be sure to change the lives of the working class for the better. Most importantly, we welcome their resolution in relation to the SACP’s resolution on contesting elections and their support to the call for radical reconfiguration of the alliance.
Workers should focus more on what unites them, than what divides them. We will develop a plan to establish workplace units in the province working together with affiliates. We will soon meet with Cosatu leadership in the province to develop a programme moving forward.
Fight against corruption and serve the people selflessly
The PWC noted with concern the continuing collapse of good governance in the local government sphere. The deteriorating state of local government in the province as indicated by the recently released audit outcomes which reflect that there are financial and leadership challenges in this sphere it calls for a serious turn-around plan to make things better. There are reports of rampant looting of municipal resources aimed at delivering basic services to our people. We commit to focusing our energy in strengthening the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and making sure that our people receive quality services.
The meeting noted the ongoing Zondo Commission of Inquiry on State Capture and calls on its members and society in general to support the inquiry. This confirms our long-held view that the past decade under the leadership of former President Jacob Zuma, corruption became a norm rather than an exception. We would further like to condemn the shallow political opportunism by particularly the DA and their bed-mates, the EFF, for their attempts to side-track the important work of the commission.
The meeting further noted with concern the continued deliberate and baseless attacks on the SACP and its leaders by reactionary media and faceless people mostly as part of the fight-back clique who seek to depict the Party negatively as indicated in the false VBS links, while there is little said about De Klerk’s links with Bosasa.
Towards the ANC-headed alliance electoral victory
The SACP calls on all its members to rise in defence of the revolution and participate in all election structures in the province. We note with concern the concerted efforts by the opposition and those masquerading as revolutionaries while in dark corners are working very hard to reduce the movement’s support base in the forthcoming general elections. Currently, the unity of the movement is of paramount importance in defence of our hard fought democratic breakthrough and we call on the society in general to vote for the ANC-headed alliance as a guarantee for the continuation of the transformation of our society from colonial outpost into a democratic and sovereign country based on the values of non-racialism and non-sexism to the advancement of social justice and redress for historically disadvantaged masses of our people.
