The South African Communist Party (SACP) Alfred Nzo and Matatiele Sub District once again strongly condemn the rape of a seven-year old Grade1 learner at Bergville College in Matatiele. The incident, which occurred in October 2024, remains unresolved. No one has been arrested and held accountable. This must be addressed if South Africa is to win the battle against gender-based violence and child abuse. The police must strengthen their work and society its mobilisation against the unspeakable crime.
Nevertheless, we applaud the MEC for Education in the Eastern Cape Fundile Gade for his action to withdraw the registration of the school.
The school principal has not co-operated with the law enforcement authorities by refusing to undergo a DNA test, unlike other companions who were in contact with the learner on the day of the incident.
The principal and school management have not accounted fully on the internal processes they have undertaken to assist in identifying the perpetrator.
The threat by the racially-biased Afri-Forum to take the Department and MEC Gade to court for his decision to close the school must be met with formidable legal and mobilisation defence. We must not allow Afri-Forum to successfully resuscitate the apartheid idea that a black child’s life is not important.
We call on all relevant law enforcement authorities to work tirelessly to ensure that the perpetrator is identified and held accountable.
