SACP Limpopo calls on ANC PEC to take a stand on attacks against the SACP by ANC leaders

5 January  2026

The SACP has been observing a disturbing trend in the province in which there seems to be a well coordinated offensive against the existence of the Alliance by a particular dominant faction within the ANC leadership.

The SACP is not aware of any formal position of the ANC agitating for the attack on the Party or advocating for the end of the Alliance. As such, these strange activities are viewed as those of an ill-disciplined faction with no grasp of the history of the Alliance or the contribution the SACP has made to the ANC and the NDR over many years of our difficult struggles as a revolutionary movement.

Such contributions ranged from the infusion of the non-racial and non-sexist character of the struggle against apartheid, the embedding of class content in the NDR, the availability of resources including offices and secret locations for the ANC leadership in the 1950s and early 60s, the formation of the joint SACP and ANC military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe, the mobilisation of military and financial support, as well as training facilities for MK cadres and students in the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Cuba and other countries which supported the struggle against apartheid.

As emphasised since the SACP 15th National Congress in July 2022 and the 5th Special National Congress December 2024, the SACP is seriously concerned that the undue delay in the reconfiguration of the Alliance has given space to neo-liberal elements within the Movement to pursue an agenda different to what has sustained the Alliance throughout the years. This situation will continue to deteriorate unless the ANC and the Alliance act with urgency and save the NDR from being completely hijacked by an anti-working class and anti-transformation agenda that is taking root currently.

A number of incidents that have taken place in the past nine months or so in the province clearly points to a lack of an appreciation of this glorious history and theoretical framework underpinning the continual need for a strong reconfigured Alliance in the execution of the NDR. The conduct also contradicts and undermines the strategic imperative of the ANC as contained in its Strategy and Tactics documents which have always correctly characterised the ANC as a disciplined force of the left.

In the aftermath of the SACP decision to contest by elections, with Limpopo taking the lead, some leaders of the ANC in the regions have blatantly sought to harass and intimidate some of the ANC members who also participate in SACP structures, even going to the extent of urging them to choose between the two organisations. Again, this clearly betrays lack of political maturity and understanding of the complexity of the relationship between the ANC and the SACP as independent organisations which are conscious of the fact that the current challenges, including the complex issue of dual membership, should be debated and processed with caution and discipline within formal structures rather than kangaroo sessions.

It was the NEC of the ANC in 2025 which resolved, as aptly captured by President Ramaphosa in his closing remarks to the meeting, that '...members of the SACP who are members of the ANC have the same rights as all other members of the ANC".

Quite recently in December 2025, the Limpopo ANCYL Provincial Secretary insulted the SACP during the ANCYL national conference held at the University of Limpopo even calling for the SACP to be excluded from ANC activities and events.

Following on his sponsored orders, just on Friday last week, the SACP's invitation to be part of the memorial service of Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi was withdrawn at the instruction of senior members of the ANC PEC. A very first in the history of the Alliance.

All these strange phenomena are characteristics of a conscious pattern to drift the ANC from the left to neo-liberalism and counter revolution. This has to be resisted by all revolutionaries within the ANC in the province, the Alliance and the broader progressive movement.

Given the serious nature of these developments, which may well be affecting other provinces in various manifestations, the SACP in Limpopo calls on the ANC PEC to take a stand and publicly pronounce on its position, hopefully in the interest of safeguarding the integrity and sanctity of the Alliance and the NDR.
