SACP has no confidence in Western Cape's uninspiring, weak and recycled cabinet

15 June 2024

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape strongly believes that the DA is not committed to improving service delivery for the poor majority. Alan Winde appointed a very weak and incompetent cabinet that is bereft of any fresh ideas to carry out the developmental and transformation agenda the province deserves.

Recycling of old and weak MECs is uninspiring and a clear sign that the DA is incapable of improving the lived experience of the poor through equitable distribution of resources, accelerated service delivery and inclusive governance.

Western Cape government under the watch of this cabinet will continue to remain stagnant or worse regress in many core portfolios. For instance, Winde retains the incompetent MEC of Education who failed dismally to improve access to, and the quality of, education in the province. Every year, large numbers of working-class learners remain unplaced and therefore are denied access to education which deprives them of an opportunity to improve their life chances.

The transport system of the province under the DA is biased to the affluent areas which are predominantly White. A typical example of this will be the dedication of resources and infrastructure in these areas, through the province's transport integration plan, in which the MyCity buses will only be seen in the metro and especially in affluent places. This is a hindrance to economic growth more than it is a punishment for the poor and especially Blacks, as it frustrates the movement of the workforce from underdeveloped transport infrastructure areas. In many instances, the DA-led government has shown no enthusiasm in assisting to improve and resolve challenges in the taxi industry, whose primary task is at the centre of conveniently transporting the workforce safely and affordably.

The SACP in the province had hoped for a cabinet which would bring about new energy, fresh ideas and new minds to inspire hope and address the challenges faced by our people and improve their living conditions through vibrant inclusive economic activities in safer and sustainable conditions.
