Thursday, 27 August 2026:- The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its message of support to the people of Nepal following the devastating flash floods which swept across the Nepal-China border.
We convey our condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones since the floods hit, with at least 270 reported to have lost their lives and wish speedy recovery for the injured. We also call for practical support for the recovery of the over 1,300 still missing.
Further, we urge our government to take urgent steps towards the locating and rescuing the six South African citizens, who are among at least 700 foreigners reported to be still missing and unaccounted for in Nepal.
As the SACP, we appreciate the untiring efforts of humanitarian organisations in Nepal and across the world who are engaged in search and rescue efforts and call for international solidarity with the Nepalese people at this difficult moment.
The floods have devastated largely working-class and poor communities whose entire livelihoods have been swept away with very little hope for recovery without concrete measures towards rebuilding. We thus call for all forms of practical international solidarity to help the Nepalese people rebuild their lives following the disaster.
