SACP conveys deepest condolences to the family of Comrade Cedric Gina, former General Secretary of Limusa and former President of Numsa

28 January 2019

The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its heartfelt condolences to family of Comrade Cedric Gina, who died in the early hours of Monday, 28 January 2019.

Comrade Cedric Gina was the founding General Secretary of the Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa (Limusa) and a former President of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa). He was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the SACP.

A committed trade unionist, Comrade Cedric rose through the ranks of the progressive trade union movement to play a pivotal role in mobilising metalworkers in their daily struggles for better working conditions. He will also be remembered for his commitment in the building and strengthening of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), even during Cosatu’s most trying times. He stood for the unity of workers in general and within the umbrella of Cosatu in particular and opposed the division of the federation with the full understanding that competition between and among workers can only serve the interests of the exploiters, the bourgeoisie.

The SACP also conveys its condolences to metalworkers in general and the workers of South Africa as a whole for the loss of a working class activist and trade unionist.

In his memory, the SACP calls for the deepening of unity within the ranks of South African workers in the fight against capitalist exploitation. The SACP further calls for the strengthening of our Alliance through the already agreed reconfiguration process especially towards, but more importantly beyond, the 2019 general election.
