Monday, 25 May 2026: The South African Communist Party (SACP) congratulates Mamelodi Sundowns football club for winning the 2026 Caf Champions League tournament. Sundowns are the first South African football club to win the tournament twice, thus clinching their second star in the elite continental tournament.
Having won the Caf Champions League tournament, Sundowns will, for the second time, represent the country in three major tournaments: the Caf Super Cup in October 2026, the Intercontinental Cup in December 2026, and the Club World Cup in 2029.
Being the most successful South African football club and deservedly accorded the status of being the barometer of South African football, this final marked the fourth time Mamelodi Sundowns featured in the Champions League final since 2001 – this being the club’s first back-to-back final in the tournament and the only South African club to ever do so.
The SACP greatly appreciates the support from the people of South Africa for Mamelodi Sundowns as they represented the country in their record-breaking season.
As the world now focuses on the 2026 World Cup, the SACP is confident that the future of South African football is in good hands.
In tribute to Mamelodi Sundowns and all sports-loving people in South Africa, the SACP reiterates its call to our government to deepen sports development, particularly in townships and rural areas. In doing so, the government has the duty to redress any imbalances that were created by colonial and apartheid rule, which largely impacted the black majority, with black women being the most impacted.
