Sunday, 27 September 2026; The SACP in the Western Cape reiterates its call for the declaration of a national state of disaster in areas of the Western Cape experiencing exceptional and sustained high levels of violent crime.
We make this call following the brutal killing of 10 people, with 11 others injured in the early hours of this morning Sunday, 27 September 2026, in Strand, Somerset West, alongside the killing of about four people in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, yesterday evening.
In our view, these are not isolated incidents, they essentially reflect a deepening crisis that demands urgent, decisive and coordinated intervention by all spheres of government.
Further, we reiterate our call for the immediate appointment of a Provincial Head of Police Intelligence in the Western Cape. We believe that crime prevention must be intelligence-driven, thus the need for a proactive mechanism capable of identifying and disrupting criminal networks before they strike. Therefore, the destabilisation of the police intelligence is responsible for pervasive violent crime in Cape Town.
Finally, the DA-led provincial government cannot remain a bystander while communities in Cape Town are soaked in blood. They cannot spend a billion rand on a so-called safety plan while residents continue to be killed in their homes and communities- this government must equally take accountability. It is evident that time for plans, promises and political posturing is over. Our people need intelligence, resources, accountability and decisive action now.
