As the most public face of the SACP, an influential theorist and skilful writer, Cronin is likely to play an important role in attempts to revive and unite the South African left.

He is a former political prisoner and published poet who combines personal charm and political skill. At 44, he is a member of the politburo of the SACP, editor of the party``s publications, African Communist and Umsabenzi, and member of the ANC``s national executive committee.
