The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape learned with shock of the passing away of Comrade Maurencia Gillion, who at a time of her passing was serving as an ANC Western Cape representative in the National Council of Provinces, a member of the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) and was the former Provincial Treasurer of the ANC.

Comrade Maurencia Gillion passed on yesterday afternoon whilst attending to her parliamentary duties in Cape Town.

The SACP in the Western Cape sends condolences to the family of Comrade Maurencia Gillion, Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and the broader membership of the African National Congress.

In memory of Comrade Maurencia Gillion, the SACP calls for the renewal of the ANC and the Alliance in the Western Cape as a fundamental basis to have the capacity to inspire confidence in the majority people of this province. Such a renewal should include rooting out all forms of corruption within the movement and ending what appears as an auctioning off of internal democracy within our movement where the trajectory of the ANC and its leadership are determined by highest bidders.
