The South African Communist Party (SACP) pays tribute to legendary South African musician, Steve Kekana, and conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family. The SACP also sends condolences to his colleagues in the music industry.
Kekana, who became blind at the age of five, overcame many hurdles in pursuit of excellence, both in music and education. In addition to inspiring the people through music through over 40 albums, he went on to pursue and attain an LLB and got admitted as an advocate. He later also worked as a part-time lecturer at the University of South Africa in its Department of Mercantile Law.
Unisa also awarded Kekana an honorary doctorate in Philosophy on 13 November 2020. Unisa recognised the combined value of Kekana’s stardom and impact on society, in addition to his immense contribution to music and his personal crusade to challenge the “disability” narrative wrongly associated with being visually impaired.
In memory of Steve Kekana, the SACP calls upon workers in the performing arts industry to play a direct role in the indigenisation of content, having a clear sense of history of the country and the African people’s historical struggles for self-determination. This also involves the creation of liberating and anti-imperialist content for the education of the people.
The SACP also calls upon the Department of Arts and Culture to play a proactive role in the protection of actors’ rights by enforcing essential lawful regulation of production companies in that regard, and also ensure the protection and advancement of indigenous languages and authentic South African stories.
