The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape Province sends its deepest condolences to the Mjongile family and our ANC headed alliance following the passing away of Comrade Songezo Mjongile. He passed away on Thursday evening, 17 September 2020 at his family home in Johannesburg after a short illness.

On 29 August 2020, the brave Songezo Mjongile disclosed through his social media that he discovered, on April 2020, that he was suffering from colon cancer. This disclosure must be commended as health awareness to society.

Comrade Songezo Mjongile was an organic activist in the mass democratic movement, serving in the Interim Provincial Committee and served as President of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS), National Executive Committee member and National Working Committee of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and Provincial Treasurer and  Provincial Secretary of the African National Congress in the Western Cape.

He will be remembered for his commitment to the renewal of the ANC as an agent of social change. Recently, the late Comrade Mjongile posted on his social media “we need to change gear now as Madiba generation did. ANC cannot die in our hands. The future of our people depends on it. There is no individual bigger than the ANC. It is either we save the ANC or we save individuals and sink it. The real question to me. What is the mission of our generation?”.

Comrade Mjongile dies at a time where the legitimacy of our movement as the standard bearer in society, and champion of its freedoms, is in serious threat. Thus, our movement is projected as corrupt and deeply factionalised. Crass materialism and money corrode all the values and principles of the organisation. In particular, the use of money is a cancer eating away at the ANC’s organisational values system; both its leadership and membership alike.

In memory of Comrade Songezo Mjongile, the SACP in the Western Cape calls for the renewal of the ANC and restoration of its value systems of selflessness and commitment to the historical mission of the ANC.
