SACP Moses Mabhida is baffled and disappointed by the decision of the ANC in Kwazulu-Natal to redeploy Zandile Gumede to the provincial legislature

20 August 2020

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Moses Mabhida (Kwa-Zulu Natal) Province has been inundated with enquiries on the recent redeployment of Comrade Zandile Gumede to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.

We want to put on record that the SACP in the province was neither alerted nor consulted on the redeployment of the former Mayor of eThekwini and only learnt about it when it appeared on the television screens. Such development occurs when we were preparing to forward our concerns as the Party in the province for the non-consultation by our Alliance partner on the recall of the Mayor of Phongola Local Municipality, Speaker of Umngeni Local Municipality, Deputy Mayor of eMadlangeni and Speaker of UMkhanyakude District Municipality from their positions.

Furthermore, it is saddening and surprising that deployments, redeployments and recalling of deployees can be done in KwaZulu-Natal outside the Provincial Deployment Committee.

This kind of leadership within the Alliance in the province undermines the essence of the foundations of the Revolutionary Alliance, Organisational Ethical Morality and internal party democracy.

This is happening a day after the national office of the ANC is alleged to have issued a communication to all ANC Provincial Chairpersons and Secretaries calling for a meeting on 19 August 2020 where these structures were to report on steps they took against ANC members and public representatives accused of corruption and fraud. We were delighted by this move only to be disappointed by this decision to “promote or redeploy” former
Mayor Gumede who is still facing serious allegations in the court of law. We are left baffled, disappointed and flabbergasted by this action as the SACP in Moses Mabhida Province.

This KwaZulu-Natal ANC’s move happened at a time where the ANC is under tremendous attacks for apparently allowing the culture of corruption to reign freely in the government and in the structures of the organisation. Another complaint within the Alliance is the erosion of the culture of collective decision-making and democratic practices. As the Party in the province, we are taking this act as not only an insult to the Alliance but to the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the government. The SACP in Moses Mabhida disassociates itself from any act that tend to undermine and disrespect the integrity of the government, Party and Alliance democratic practices.

The SACP in Moses Mabhida will convene a Provincial Executive Committee Special Meeting on Sunday, 23 August 2020. Amongst matters to be discussed in the meeting will be the redeployment of Zandile Gumede to the Legislature, recall of Municipal Mayors and Municipal Speakers, developments around Covid-19 and corruption in KwaZulu-Natal Municipalities and Provincial Government.
