The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape has learnt with great sense of sadness the passing of Mrs Matilda Maneli. Mrs Matilda Maneli is an activist of the African National Congress (ANC) and wife to Comrade Khanyile Maneli, Regional Chairperson of the ANC Amathole Region and the Mayor of Amathole District Municipality. Mrs Matilda Maneli succumbed to COVID-19 related illness in the early hours of yesterday morning.
We convey our heartfelt condolences to Comrade Khanyile Maneli, the entire family, colleagues of Mrs Maneli and the ANC, we wish them strength to go through this difficult period. Mrs Maneli was one of the many patriotic healthcare workers who are in the frontline of the fight against the novel coronavirus. In her memory and that of many who have fallen because of this pandemic, we must all commit to combat the novel coronavirus. Let us continue with the struggle for full implementation of the National Health Insurance, whose fundamental principle is universal access to healthcare which shall not be treated like any other commodity of trade, but as a social investment. The current crisis of the coronavirus has once more proven the inability of capitalism to resolve challenges facing humanity, it is therefore important to build blocks for the system that puts life before profits.
As the SACP, we reiterate our call to all patriots to adhere to the regulations of the national lockdown and stay safe.
Issued by the SACP Eastern Cape.
