13 May 2020
The South African Communist Party (SACP) sends heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, comrades and friends of Dr Clarence Mini who succumbed to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) on Tuesday 12 May 2020. The SACP sends its deepest condolences especially to his wife, Nancy, and his two children, Yandi and Nonhle.
At the time of his death, Dr Mini was the Chairperson of the Council of Medical Schemes.
Dr Mini selflessly served the democratic movement during the apartheid years, contributing to the struggle against racial and patriarchal discrimination. In exile, he trained in Angola as part of the June 16 Detachment of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK). His qualifications in medicine, acquired in Bulgaria, did not make him abandon the movement. Instead, his working-class consciousness rooted him in the struggle for social emancipation. He applied his acquired knowledge by providing medical services to his comrades.
Upon return from exile, Dr Mini consciously decided to serve the people in the health sector, in various capacities. He dedicated his focus on contributing to the reform of the health-care sector, including through the struggle for universal health-care by means of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
The SACP calls for the intensification of the fight against Covid-19. In this fight, the private sector, which serves only 16 per cent of the population at exorbitant costs and for private profit interests, must be directed to make its contribution but by placing people before private profits and providing facilities and health-care services on humanitarian grounds. The importance of the government’s decisive leadership and regulatory role in this regard cannot be overemphasised.
The NHI must be implemented to ensure the provision of quality health-care services to all the people in South Africa, more especially the overwhelming majority of the workers and poor who are excluded by the private profit based health-care sector on the ground that they do not have money pay.
