SACP condemns coup attempt against the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

6 May 2020

The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns in the strongest terms possible the coup attempt on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its democratically elected government. These attempts were driven through the Colombian territory on Sunday 3 May 2020, aimed at undermining the Venezuelan government and to destabilise the Venezuelan state and national sovereignty.

The defence of the independence and the right to self-determination of Venezuela demands unity among the people of the world in defence of democracy.

It is clear that the imperialist forces and their stooges will not even be swayed by the realities of the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) from attacking any sovereign state. Acts of aggression committed against Cuba and Venezuela by the United States have worsened notwithstanding the solidarity efforts of the two countries in the fight against the virus. No pandemic, clearly, will ever halt such violations of international law, and the working class would do well to also intensify its defence systems against imperialism.

So callous have the attacks been on Venezuela and Cuba that the United States regime intensified its economic sanctions on these countries and blocked vital medical supplies in the midst of the devastating pandemic. These potentially genocidal acts have been roundly condemned by a myriad of democratic bodies and nations around the globe, including the United Nations.

It is well documented that the United States regime has never relented on its war of attrition with many countries around the world, particularly those which have assertively guarded their right to govern themselves without foreign interference. The examples of the United States’ long imperialist war against the people of Vietnam as well as the 1961 Bay of Pigs coup attempt on Cuba are still fresh in the minds and lives of many.

The SACP calls for the greatest unity of the working class in defence of democracy and the right to the self-determination of nations. The fight against Covid-19 should not replace the fight against imperialism but should be carried out hand in hand with it. In addition to the fight against the virus, there must be efforts to reconnect under these perilous conditions and advance and intensify the struggle against imperialism.
