The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape Province is gutted by the cold-blooded murder of an undercover police officer, Constable Thando Sigcu, allegedly by a Cape Town law enforcement officer. Constable Sigcu was brutally murdered whilst apprehending a robbery suspect in the Cape Town Central Business District on 7 January 2020.
Constable Sigcu met his untimely death while on the call of duty combating crime. He was gunned down in full view of the public, yet no arrest has been made. Given the many cameras within the Cape Town Central Business District, there ought to be video footage of the incident.
This incident brings into sharp focus the problems brought about by parallel law enforcement agencies within the Republic. Therefore, the idea of a single police service, as envisioned by the Constitution, must be implemented urgently. This will help synergise crime-fighting capacity without unnecessary contradictions and further maximise all the state resources towards a single goal of combating all forms of crimes.
We commend the leadership of the South African Police Services (SAPS) under the leadership of Comrade Bheki Cele in handling the incident.
As the SACP in the Western Cape Province, we find it appalling that the Democratic Alliance (DA) leadership of the Province and City of Cape Town has not shown any form of solidarity to the departed officer. The absence of the Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Albert Fritz, and the City of Cape Town Mayoral Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, in the memorial services that have been held is clear confirmation of the DA’s callous disregard and contemptuous attitude for the life and the grieving family of Constable Sigcu.
The SACP in the Western Cape calls on the leadership of the City of Cape Town to avail the video of the crime scene. Further, we demand immediate arrest of the officer responsible for this murder and call on the City to cooperate fully with SAPS investigation on the full circumstances leading to the cold-blooded murder of this loyal and dedicated police officer.
