2 November 2019
The South African Communist Party (SACP) joins the people of South Africa in celebrating the victory of the Springboks in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The SACP particularly notes and congratulates the Springboks on the show of teamwork and unity, notwithstanding many adverse conditions against them.
Today the world also witnessed the first Black South African captain lifting the Rugby World Cup trophy. The SACP thus congratulates Captain Siya Kolisi for his leadership, uniting the team and the entire population towards the victory. Through his leadership, many young, particularly Black, South Africans have gained confidence in the belief that they as well can achieve their dreams if they work hard along with others based on common goals and mutual support.
The SACP calls for further development of rugby, especially in the townships and rural areas where many Black youngsters live. This should also apply in other sport codes, especially those in which Black people were excluded from prime development during the colonial and apartheid era.
The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture should speed up the development of common sport, artistic expression and shared national culture in line with our constitutional vision of a non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa in which prosperity is not reserved for a few but is worked hard for and shared by the people as a whole. The acceleration of sports development in townships and rural areas should be made a key element of the education system and approached as part of broader human development as well as a career path, rather than merely a hobby. This should form part of our national employment strategy, cultural and artistic transformation.
