The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns the invasion of Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty by Turkey. The Turkish military violated international law when it invaded northeast Syria, hitting the territory with artillery and airstrikes, targeting Kurdish-controlled areas. As a result, people are rapidly evacuating the region, and many have been killed.
These attacks are a latest in a number of violations of Syrian territorial sovereignty by Turkey. The aim of the attacks by the Turkish military, as directed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is to wipe out the northeast Syrian population and take over the territory. With the success of this takeover, the upshot would be the worsening of the war in Syria, which was already showing prospects of coming to a total end.
The SACP calls for anti-imperialist action against this latest invasion by Turkey. The aim of these progressive actions must go beyond the present aggressive action but towards the end of the bloody war which has killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians.
