SACP mourns the death of Comrade Teenage Monama, the Party`s Limpopo Provincial Chairperson
18 February 2018
The South African Communist Party mourns the death of the Party`s Limpopo Provincial Chairperson Comrade Jacob Leka `Teenage` Monama. Comrade Teenage passed away in the early hours of Sunday, 18 February 2018 after a short illness while hospitalised in Polokwane. The SACP conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Monama family, the community of his home town Modimolle and the whole of our movement for complete liberation and social emancipation.
Monama was a founder member of the Congress of South African Students in 1979. He fiercely fought against apartheid in the 1980s and 1990s until the apartheid government was dislodged in 1994. He was imprisoned by the apartheid regime for two years for refusing to testify against his fellow comrades. After his prison term he skipped the country to join the joint SACP and ANC military wing, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) in Angola. He returned from exilein 1991.
Comrade Teenage served in several capacities in the SACP, ANC and the MK Military Veterans Association. He was elected to the responsibility of MKMVA Deputy National Chairperson. At the time of his death he was serving as SACP Limpopo Provincial Chairperson and by virtue of the responsibility an ex-officio member of the Party`s Central Committee.
Manama was instrumental in fighting against the corporate capture of our movement and the state. The bravery he displayed in this fight saw him ostracised by captured sections that wrecked political and socio-economic havoc in our country and subordinated our sovereignty to parasitic state capture networks. In an equal measure of conviction, he fought against the New Tendency that bankrupted and collapsed the Limpopo Provincial Government inn 2011/12.
Comrade Jacob Leka `Teenage` Monama is survived by children, grandchildren and his mother.
The SACP in consultation with the family will announce details of the date, place and time of his burial.
