Out of a total of 26 councils, the ANC won 23 outright and won the highest number of seats in the remaining three.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Northern Cape on Friday congratulated its tripartite alliance partner the African National Congress (ANC) on its victory in the local government elections in the province.

“The huge voter turnout and active participation by our people is a sign of a stable and growing democratisation of our country, said provincial spokesperson Patrick Bosiame. “This has allowed the ANC to claim a decisive victory across all wards within the province.

Out of a total of 26 councils, the ANC won 23 outright and won the highest number of seats in the remaining three, but will have to go into a coalition in order to rule.

Bosime went on to thank the poor and the working class for “showing confidence in the ANC-led alliance to continue leading our local municipalities.

“As the SACP, we commit ourselves to ensure that our local municipalities are able to contribute to changing the lives of our people for the better, he said.

In doing so, Bosime said the SACP reiterated its call for - among others - an end to outsourcing and privatisation of basic services within local municipalities, the eradication of corruption, and extending of working hours in the public sector to increase accessibility for the working class and poor, and breaking the dependence of communities on capitalism.
