SACP Eastern Cape welcomes SIU probe into corruption allegations in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality

23 September 2015

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape notes and welcomes the proclamation signed by President Jacob Zuma for the SIU to investigate Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM). We believe that the investigation is long overdue as BCMM been embroiled in a string of corrupt activities for a sustained period of time.

The SACP has for a long time been in an unparalleled principle fighting against corruption as it is a direct stumbling block to the rendering of services to the people. On 29 November 2011, our youth wing, the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) led a march calling for answers and action on the Ernst & Young report and other corruption allegations in the municipalities.

Till today there has been neither action nor recourse for those allegations and the YCLSA memorandum of demands is still gathering dust somewhere in the municipality.

On 27 March 2015, the SACP led an anti-corruption march calling for a decisive action including among others Ernst & Young Report, Nelson Mandela scandal, and all allegations of corrupt activities. The march was joined by our allies and the South African Council of Churches. Part of these actions includes various marches and protest actions by the workers of BCMM led by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU).

The SACP has always been calling for decisive action in all allegations of corruption in the BCMM. We also find it interesting that some who suddenly profess to welcome the SIU investigation were in the forefront of throwing insults against the anti-corruption voices, actions, and were part of those who are impatient with anti-corruption voices and actions.

This investigation should be given space and the necessary support. All our actions must ensure that public money is recouped and all those found guilty of fraud and corruption face the full might of the law.

The SACP will continue working with all the progressive people`s organs to fight corruption wherever it raises its ugly head.
