SACP Mpumalanga Province hosted successful FSCC Launch

18 November 2013

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Mpumalanga Province held a successful provincial launch of the Financial Sector Campaign Coalition (FSCC) this past weekend on 16 November 2013 at Thanduxolo Hall in Emalahleni. The launch was attended by approximately 100 participants representing organisations including SACP, Progressive Youth Alliance, SANACO, COSATU, SANCO, etc. The launching seminar considered the current state of the FSCC and transformation challenges in the financial sector and further launched a provincial chapter.

Outcomes

The seminar noted numerous challenges which affect various stakeholders within the province and developed recommendations, inter alia:

  1. Establish consumer advisory centres in all the districts and possibly in all our communities, as a one stop advice centre on consumer matters. The seminar committed coalition members to fight for the Banks to fund these centres.
  2. The FSCC will intensify the fight against evictions in our communities
  3. Engage the cell phone industry on the issue of call rates.
  4. Improve the services of Mzansi Account and protect it from the Banks attempt to do away with it.
  5. Call on government to speed up the process of establishing the co-operatives academy and develop a preferential treatment for co-operatives.
  6. Call for the public administration of all unclaimed pension and retirement fund benefits.
  7. Call for a legislation to improve or create the socially responsible investments to be developmental in nature.
  8. Coordinate a process to form co-operative banks and other viable forms of collective banking.
  9. Call for the speedy allocation of the full banking license to the Post Bank and create viable and dependable enterprises for sustainable livelihoods.
  10. Fight against securitization of credit and balancing the scale of justice between the banks and the consumers, and launch a spirited fight against the selling of debt books by some of the municipalities and fight against the unlawful collection of debts including garnishee orders.
  11. We also need to build partnerships to unleash the developmental potential within the taxi industry in order to serve the poor and the working class better.
  12. Convene a provincial financial sector summit to engage other stakeholders and develop a program of action taking forward these and other strategic objectives.

March to CAPITEC Bank

The seminar was followed by a successful March to CAPITEC Bank where a memorandum was handed to the Sales Manager to hand over to seniors and the Banking council of South Africa. In particular a note was delivered to CAPITEC Bank for turning itself as a politically bias bank in funding the vigilante group in Marikana. This has to be investigated and dealt with decisively.
