Red October Campaign Activities in the Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces

Red October Campaign Activities in the Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces

10 October 2003

This weekend will see the second leg of activities in the 2003 Red October
Campaign of the South African Communist Party (SACP). This campaign was
launched at the ZZ2 farm in Limpopo province on 05 October in solidarity
with, and in support of the more than 1000 farm workers who were dismissed
for demanding compliance with the government's sectoral determination on
farm workers.

Western Cape Activities

The activities will start with the holding of the SACP's Western Cape
Provincial Council (10h00, 11 October, Community House, Salt River Road,
Salt River, Cape Town).

This Council will be attended by 80 delegates from SACP branches across the Western Cape and it will be opened by the SACP Deputy General Secretary, Jeremy Cronin. The Council will adopt a provincial programme of action on the Red October campaign and mobilise SACP structures for the campaign.

The Western Cape Launch of the Campaign will start at 10h00 on Sunday, 12 October through an SACP visit led by Jeremy Cronin to the Old Age Home and Centre of the Disabled in Langa township, Cape Town. This will include a Public Meeting in Langa township which will focus on rights of vulnerable workers, service delivery by the municipality, social security registration and assisting the community of Langa with ID applications. The public meeting will be held at the Langa Sports Complex.

Northern Cape Activities

On 11 and 12 October, the Ruth First (Upington) District of the SACP will
hold mass meetings with farm workers in the grape farms along the Orange and Vaal Rivers.

Many farms in this areas have in the past refused permission for entry to
trade union organisers and IEC officials.

Already, the SACP in the Northern Cape is working with COSATU and SAAPAWU in dealing with a looming lay-off of workers by the Griekwa Cooperatives
workers.

The Northern Cape campaign will also focus on the conditions of domestic
workers in the greater Kimberley area and farm-workers in the Vaalharts
area.
