Computers Stolen from KwaZulu Natal Office of the SACP

17 September 2001

The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns what it regards as a politically motivated theft of 2 computers, hard copies of several political documents and a sum of R2600 from its KwaZulu Natal Provincial Office. According to witnesses these items were loaded onto a car parked outside our office on Saturday evening. The photocopier was found abandoned in the lift leading to the SACP office.

The theft of the documents and the computers, which have other important
documents and membership information, is not honest. Given that the thieves
had unlimited access to our office and the items stolen, this theft is not
an ordinary crime. If it was an ordinary crime, the thieves would have also
stolen the cheque book and the large number of SACP jackets, t-shirts and
other material sold by the SACP. Clearly, the crime is politically motivated
and was well planned.

The British colonial regime intimidated us at our founding in 1921. The
apartheid regime went even further by banning us and confiscating all our
property and records in 1950. We have been subject to several other forms of
harassment and thuggery. All those efforts failed. Whoever thinks that
through this crime they will demoralise and weaken the SACP they are
mistaken. Instead this deepens our resolve to fight for a radical National
Democratic Revolution and the achievement of socialism. We will refuse any
kind of intimidation because we are the true representatives of the working
class. We call on all our structures and the South African working class to
defend ideals and property of the SACP.

Already, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating this
crime. We call on all those who may have information about this crime to
come forward with information to the SACP and the SAPS.
