Statement of the SACP Northern Cape on the assasination attempt on 2nd Deputy General Secretary
12 April 2017
The South African Communist Party in the Northern Cape has noted with serious concern attempts on the life of the 2nd Deputy General Secretary Cde Solly Mapaila on the occasion of the commemoration of the assassination of Cde Chris Hani on the 10th April 2017. We view this as an attempt not only against Cde Mapaila but also against the South African Communist Party as an organization. The views that have been expressed by Cde Mapaila are not his own but are collective decisions of the SACP.
This heinous attempt, would in no way deter us but would further strengthen our resolve to confront the current challenges facing the Movement and the Alliance which amongst others include corporate capture within the ranks of our movement and the state, corruption, rent-seeking, patronage and the abuse of the state machinery to fight political battles. No amount of intimidation will deter us in fighting the destructive tendencies that are besieging our movement at this moment. We view this as a worst form of political and ideological degeneration which would destroy the ANC and its Alliance.
We implore the Central Committee to sharply raise this matter with the ANC and the State Security apparatus including reporting this matter to the Inspector General of Intelligence to ensure that it is followed up and the perpetrators are apprehended. This must be understood within the context of the ongoing political killings of members of the SACP in Inchanga, KwaZulu-Natal. These attempts would only strengthen our resolve and the correctness of our conviction on the posture we have taken in the current political epoch. The SACP shall not be intimidated by this assassination attempt but will strengthen our resolve to restore the dignity of our movement and rebuild the confidence that the masses of our people had in our broad liberation movement.
