Statement on the Constitutional Court judgment and proclamation by the President recognising H.M. Thulare Victor Thulare III as the king of the Bapedi people

19 April 2020

The South African Communist Party encourages and welcomes peaceful resolution of disputes in a democratic society,..., and accordingly notes that President Cyril Ramaphosa this month issued a certificate recognising H.M. Thulare Victor Thulare III as the king of the Bapedi people following a Constitutional Court judgment on 4 March 2020.

The SACP remains firmly committed to a democratic republic in our country. However, it is a historical fact that the Sekhukhune kingdom played a great and heroic role in the wars that our people fought gallantly against British colonialism and imperialism and its apartheid variant. These wars were fought by our people in their respective geographies according to the forms of social organisation corresponding with their respective generations and state of development across the length and breadth of the land of South Africa in opposition to colonisation and imperialism as well as its associated dispossession and exploitation. For this reason the SACP wishes to salute them for having contributed towards our country’s democratic dispensation.

The SACP calls for unity and sustained social mobilisation to build a widest possible patriotic front to solve our societal problems, such as the novel coronavirus pandemic, poverty, unemployment, inequality and uneven development, and to work together towards collective prosperity.

The land affected by the dispute which has now been peacefully resolved by the Constitutional Court and the proclamation signed by the President has significant mineral resource endowments. It is also rich in other natural resources, including arable land. In addition to maintaining peace as well as deepening democracy and upholding the outcomes of democratic processes, the SACP is calling for the natural resources of our country as a whole, our common heritage, to be used sustainably in a way that protects the environment and benefits the people – the majority of whom comprises the working class and poor.
