The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape welcomes the deployment of about 200 police officers in the Western Cape to help root out crime such as gangsterism and extortion-related crimes.
Whilst we welcome the prioritisation of townships such as Kraaifontein, Nyanga and Philippi, attention must also be given to Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Mitchel's Plain, and Manenberg too, before the crisis of crime further escalates as people who provide basic services and those involved in sports activities are to get robbed and shot at by these heartless criminals.
The SACP takes this deployment as an important step to root out the rampant extortion and gangsterism in our communities. However, for this initiative to be effective, it will require an integrated policing that will include the involvement of the metro police and all other law enforcement agencies in the province. Therefore, we call upon MEC for Community Safety Albert Fritz and Mayco member JP Smith to support and be part of this important effort by availing all the local resources meant to fight crime in our communities.
The SACP in the Western Cape reiterates its call for the re-vetting and lifestyle audit of all men and women in blue and including local leaders who are involved or leading local organs of people's power such as school governing bodies, development forums and community policing forums.
Furthermore, the SACP in the Western Cape calls on Minister Cele to establish a special operation to work on old and closed dockets. The SACP is certain that many closed dockets are struck off the roll or nolle-prosequi on account of insufficient time given by the detectives during an investigation of the cases. Thus the government must work out a system to ensure that there is a set reasonable ratio for allocating dockets to detectives so that detectives can be effective and efficient. The SACP is concerned that there are detectives who carry between 80 and more than 100 dockets on hand.
