SACP (Western Cape) Condemns Intimidation by Taxi Operators

12 May 2000

The SACP.Western Cape Condemns the intimidation carried out by the taxi
operators in the Black Townships, and condemns the intimidation and assaulting
people in the areas especially Khayelitsha and Nyanga East. The SACP is
concern about the assault of its Provincial Executive member Khaya Magaxa AND
teacher in Khayelitsha yesterday at Gunpoint, after his car was damaged by a
taxi operator on the scene:

The SACP Provincial Secretary emphasised that “the fact that operators
assaulted Khaya Magaxa at Gunpoint call for extra measures by the authorities,
without further delays. The Jungle Law cannot be allowed in this country. It
must be stopped”.

We call on our communities to remain calm in the face of this intimidation,
and to allow the law to take its course. And we want to warn the intimidators
that the patience of the people is not endless. We support the ANC initiatives
to Normalise the Public transport in the Western Cape’s "Cape Flats and Black
Townships". We call on taxi operator to expose the intimidators by co-operating with the Police to bring to book the law breakers”. He ended his
statement with a message of sympathy , referring to the violence that led to
the taxi driver’s death yesterday and said :

"We would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the taxi
driver who was shot and killed in the crossfire yesterday in Khayelitsha".

!!Socialism is the future. Build it now.
