SACP Northern Cape Province PEC Statement following PEC meeting

17 June 2020

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Northern Cape held its regular 5th Congress Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting through a virtual platform on Saturday 13 June 2020. The meeting was convened to assess the state of the organisation and political developments in the province, nationally as well as internationally. The PEC received both the Political and Organisational reports which were discussed by the meeting. The meeting also received an input by the SACP 14th Congress Central Committee Member, SACP 2nd Deputy General Secretary, Comrade Chris Matlhako.

The PEC reflected on, and thanked, the people of Cuba for their heroic act of proletarian internationalism, genuine solidarity with humanity and their selflessness during this Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting further condemned the U.S aggression against the people of Venezuela and congratulated the Venezuelan people for their steadfastness in rejection of the U.S led aggression and attempts to overthrow the legitimate president through an attempted coup.

As we continue to navigate the new realities brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, the SACP in the Northern Cape is of the view that we cannot go back to the old “normal”. The socio-economic impact of the pandemic on the working class has been devastating especially on child-headed households, the elderly, women, children and vulnerable workers across the province. This requires a united revolutionary alliance, based on honesty and integrity, working in the interests of our people.

As the SACP in the Northern Cape, we are, however, concerned by how the Alliance is currently functioning in the province under the leadership of the African National Congress which is characterised by deceit, insincerity and dishonesty on issues of governance, accountability and strategic deployment.

The manner in which the list of the legislature and NCOP were changed recently without genuine consensus-seeking consultation with the Alliance is disingenuous, to say the least.

The PEC agreed that this period must be used to ensure that the Alliance is correctly reconfigured to better address matters that affect the National Democratic Revolution. As we approach the de-escalation of the lockdown and prepare for the peak in infections, we must ensure that the Alliance becomes the strategic political centre to provide leadership to society and implement the popular mandate we received from the masses in 2016 and 2019, respectively.

The PEC further agreed that we must intensify our work in our communities focusing, amongst others, on the following:

  • Implement the National Health Insurance and COVID-19 awareness
  • The fight against gender-based violence
  • Build safer communities
  • Defend farmworkers and dwellers
  • Intensify the Financial Sector Campaign for debt relief
  • Build the Party and Alliance structures

The SACP in the Northern Cape lowers its red flag and joins the entire revolutionary movement in mourning the untimely passing of Comrade Kagisho Mokubong and Comrade Elizabeth Mabisto Manopole. Their contribution to betterment of our people’s lives will never go unnoticed. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of these dearly departed comrades.
