National Strategy Confrence 3-5 Sept 1999

Resolution on Co-Operatives

That this Strategy Conference convinced

  1. That co – operative and other collective forms of ownership offer a
    practical means of Providing income and employment to significant numbers of
    our people at the Present stage of the NDR

  2. That if appropriately organised and given clear political direction can be
    become a stepping stone in a transition to socialism

Therefore commits itself to play a leading role in driving the formation of a
progressive co – operative movement in South Africa.

Towards this end

  1. Adopts the proposals on P. 48 of the Discussion Document

  2. Recommends that the leadership, in consultation with the Alliance and
    government, identifies changes in legislation that may be required to
    facilitate the formation of co – operatives

  3. Recommends that the leadership identifies forms of support and privileging
    of co – operatives that may be necessary in order to encourage their
    development including priority tendering and accessing development finance,
    training, and practical assistance

  4. Assessses the experience of building co – operatives to date with a view
    to identifying particular sectors and forms of pro – active intervention.
