SACP Limpopo PEC statement on Chris Hani memorial events and ANC delegates assemblies

27 April 2022

The Provincial Executive Committee of the 8th SACP Limpopo Congress takes this opportunity to congratulate all our five Districts for the successful memorial events held in honour of our former General Secretary, Comrade Chris Hani, over this past weekend of 23-24 April 2022. We continue to support the Hani family in calling for a full disclosure around the circumstances that led to his brutal assassination by  the right-wing Janusz Walus, whose occasionally mooted release from prison should be rejected and condemned by all the justice-seeking people of this country.

The memorial events signified the determination of the leadership in the districts to rebuild active and dynamic branches necessary for the achievement of our programmes against capitalism in all its manifestations, including its sustained immoral obsession with maximum profits at the expense of a better life for the workers and communities.

All our PEC deployees have effectively used the events to further conscientise branches towards an all-round offensive to deepen the crisis of capitalism whilst simultaneously defending the gains of the 1994 democratic breakthrough. This offensive should include, amongst others, sustaining the fight against corruption, pressuring all three spheres of government to be aggressive and decisive in the transformation of the economy, actively supporting workers’ struggles in the mines, factory floor and other agricultural and industry sites, mobilising and joining communities on sector specific issues such as co-operatives, land restitution and food security, water and sanitation, access to quality education and health services, as well as proper roads and other related infrastructure.

The SACP in Limpopo has noted that in the midst of our preparations and commemorations of the Chris Hani events, the ANC leadership in regions and at the provincial level was actively over-seeing so called Delegates Assemblies and Cadres Assemblies – being events in which pre-selected delegates from branches are convened in one venue to be head counted in preparation for the June provincial Conference to the exclusion of others who are deemed to be belonging to opposing factions or lobby groups. We urge the leadership and activists of the ANC to use these fora to foster unity instead of undermining the renewal project. Of course, we remain convinced that these assemblies are inconsistent with the true tradition of our revolutionary movement, are not in accordance with the letter and spirit of the ANC constitution and that an honest and constructive debate should be opened about their political relevance and organisational significance. The forthcoming conferences of the ANC and the Alliance structures should make thorough reflections on these matters.

Flowing from the proceedings of these assemblies, the SACP also calls for an honest dialogue between the ANC, the leadership of the traditional authorities, traditional healers and the public about the unusual practice of singing sacred traditional songs (instead of revolutionary songs) in such political meetings. Whilst the SACP recognises cultural celebrations generally, we caution against unintended abuse of some of the traditional values and customs and potential disrespect to the very tradition and culture. In this respect, we implore the ANC, being a leader of society, to demonstrate exemplary leadership and inculcate within the rest of the society a culture of respect to all forms of religion and cultural practises particularly those that are esteemed foundations of the culture of our people.
