SACP Gauteng Province welcomes postponement of SAHRC interdict application against demolition of houses of Lenasia Residents

15 November 2012

SACP Gauteng welcomes the decision of the South Gauteng High Court to postpone the hearing on the urgent court application to interdict the Gauteng Provincial Department of Housing from proceeding with the demolition of houses of the residents of Lenasia.

SACP firmly believe the decision to postpone the case will give the residents, mainly working class and poor people who are African and Black, the necessary relief from the daily nightmare, frustration and fear of possible demolition of their most valued houses.

We strongly reaffirm our well known position that these demolitions are backward, insensitive and unwarranted in the light of the many options that exist to manage such and other related contradictions.

We further reaffirm our view that the contradictions within Lenasia reflects a much more deeper and complex set of interests of a coalition of class forces including corrupt elements within the state to uproot and liquidate the working class and poor people out of Lenasia.

SACP will continue to support the work of the SAHRC, an organ of the state entrusted with foresight and defence of the Bill of Rights in our country’s constitution.

We applaud the SAHRC for proactively taking a clear, principled and consistent stand against the Gauteng Provincial Government, regrettably another organ of state with a mandate to improve the living conditions of the working class and poor.

We will also continue to engage the Alliance to ensure a sustainable and most revolutionary solution to this problem.
