SACP Free State condemns attempted assassination plot on Comrade Solly Mapaila

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Free State strongly condemns the attempted assassination plot on Second Deputy General Secretary Cde Solly Mapaila at a government organised event on Monday, 10 April 2017 to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Cde Chris Hani's assassination.

We are seriously disturbed and alarmed by the presence of would-be assassins at a government event where security is expected to be tight. It is hard to imagine how the gunman who appeared free-spirited amongst some hecklers, could have gained entry without some form of coordination with collaborators- this must be investigated.

The police must apprehend this gun-wielding thug who unashamedly took aim at executing Cde Mapaila at the graveside of Cde Chris Hani. This barbaric act reopen the wounds of the cowardly assassination of Cde Chris, former SACP General Secretary. We know too well that rand-seekers, capitalists and those with uncontrollable lust for power would stop at nothing to purse their crooked ends.

Taking cue from the courageous character of Cde Chris, we urge Cde Mapaila to remain resolute and fearless in continuing to represent the SACP in defending the revolution and confronting negative tendencies such as corruption, patronage and corporate capture within our broader movement and state. The emerging trend of mobilising and transporting howlers, hooligans and thugs to heckle and disruption certain speakers with an attempt to silence truth must be nipped in the bud. This breed intolerance and give grounds to political killings which are worryingly spreading within our provinces.
