SACP Free State calls for objective introspection and intervention in the interest of inclusive, fair and democratic renewal of the ANC in Free State

3 April 2021

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Free State Province notes the Supreme Court of Appeal’s outcome which declared the previous ANC Free State provincial conference unlawful and unconstitutional. The SACP in Free State views this decision in serious light, given its implication on the work of the movement and associated tasks of discharging leadership to society at large. The SACP urges the national leadership of the ANC to speedily intervene, in a manner that unites and uproot the fault lines of disunity in the province, in their historical manifestations.

Whilst the SACP in the province does not encourage the use of courts to decide on party political matters, the SACP appeals to the ANC, its structures and leadership to accept and use this moment for objective reflection and introspection. If the ANC leadership digs in its heels, in the interest of self-preservation, it will miss what may be an opportune turning point to unite its base in the province. The frequency of instances in which the ANC in the Free State found itself in court battles against its members demands a brutally honest reflection intended to identify and address the root causes of the internal challenges and current polarisation facing the movement. The unity of the ANC is sacrosanct and further demands respect for the supremacy of collective interests of the movement and society; and unconditional subordination of all other interests to those of the whole.

Following this court decision, the SACP calls on the ANC, as the parliament of the people and leader of the Alliance, to embark on an inclusive, fair and democratic process that consolidates unity of progressive forces and inspire confidence. This moment provides a springboard for the ANC to meaningfully self-correct, reposition and renew itself from its basic units; to reconnect with the base and restore the consolidation of its leadership role in society.
