SACP expresses its sincere condolences to the bereaved families that lost their loved ones in motor vehicle accidents, wishes speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries

19 June 2019

The SACP Limpopo Province has learnt with sadness the loss of 42 lives in road accidents in the Province during the long weekend of 16 June 2019. Particularly the horrific accident that occurred in Maphalle village, where 24 young people lost their lives, is excruciatingly saddening.

It is more concerning that most of the deceased are young people who were going to contribute to the progress of their families and the development of the Province and the nation as a whole. These accidents coincided with school winter holidays and Limpopo Province hosting the 2019 National Youth Day. The accidents show that there were no adequate traffic control operations and, in addition, that there are problems with driver behaviour and possibly also with the road worthiness of the vehicles as well as road conditions.

The SACP calls on the provincial government to take decisive steps to prevent further unnecessary casualties on our roads. This requires the strengthening of partnership with the national transport department and its road traffic management agencies.
