The South African Communist Party is concerned about the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe surrounding the doctors’ strike and the continuing suppression of human and democratic rights. The alleged abduction and torture of union leader Dr Peter Magombeyi, and other underhand methods to try and break the strike are abhorred in the strongest possible terms. It is also alleged that at least 50 other activists were abducted and brutalised in the last few months in separate situations. This is equally abhorred.
The conditions of doctors and other sections of the Zimbabwean society continue to deteriorate as as direct result of misrule, subjugation of democracy and sanctions imposed unilaterally by the United States of America and some of its European Union allies.
The SACP is calling for the lifting of the sanctions with immediate effect, but this must be tied to an end to the suppression of human and democratic rights of citizens, as well as a process of genuine national dialogue with the widest possible sections of Zimbabweans to find lasting solutions to the decades long economic collapse and political decay.
