Press Statement on the SACP Gauteng Provincial Congress
02 August 2001
The SACP Gauteng Province will hold its 7th Provincial Congress this coming
weekend. The Congress will be held under the theme Building a Broad Movement For a
People's Economy.
Details of the Congress are:
Date: 4th and 5th August 2001.
Venue: Holiday Inn hotel, corner Beatrix and Church Streets, Pretoria
Time: 10am (starting time)
The congress will be addressed by a member of the SACP Central Committee.
The Congress will make an honest assessment of our party in Gauteng in the last three years and begin preparations for the coming 11th National Congress next year. We hope to emerge from this congress with a programme to strengthen the work of our branches and districts which are central to leading and coordinating the struggle for socialism.
We will also assess the state of the Gauteng provincial economy and its overall performance in bettering the lives of our people. This congress comes in the wake of our assertion that the economy of our province and South Africa should benefit the citizens, majority of whom are working class. It also comes in the wake of an ongoing popular campaign by various organisations to transform the banks and other financial institutions. Many of these financial institutions are located in our province. The congress will have to look at strategies to intensify this campaign. There is growing confidence of the working class to struggle against capitalism, imperialism and all the problems it brought to humanity. The post 90's days of unchallenged capitalist and imperialist triamphalism are getting over.
A press briefing on the outcome of the Congress will be held on Monday 6
August. Details will follow.
