SACP saddened by the passing away of the founding President of SAMWU

6 July 2018

The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of Comrade Petrus Mashishi (72), who passed away at his home in Soweto on Wednesday. Comrade Mashishi was the founding President of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU), to which we also offer our condolences. The SACP lowers its red flag in remembrance of an exemplary servant of the workers for his decades of unwavering working class activism and leadership.

Comrade Mashishi diligently served SAMWU for more than 20 years as its shop steward and President. Through his leadership, SAMWU grew in leaps and bounds. He will forever be remembered for his commitment to building and strengthening worker unity, and for being in touch with the working people through his humble daily life.
