The South African Communist Party in the Moses Mabhida (KZN) province has learned with shock and dismay about the assasination of prominent ANC leader and Umsunduzi Municipality councillor Musawenkosi "Qashana" Mchunu.
Mchunu was attacked as he entered his home in KwaPata just outside Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.
The SACP in the Moses Mabhida province has appealed for calm and restraint urging the members of the tripartite alliance to work closely with the law enforcement agencies to apprehend the killers.
Mchunu's murder came just days after the killing of another ANC leader in the lower south coast Comrade Sifiso Cele. His death followed that of Comrade Nombuso Mqadi who was also shot dead at her house in Umzumbe a week earlier.
The SACP is extremely concerned and disturbed about the escalation of politically motivated killings in the province. It is even worse that these killings are taking place when most of the the regions are having elective conferences that are taking place under controversial circumstances.
It may not be a co-incidence that Comrade Qashana was killed for his belief and his opposition to the undemocratic processes that are currenlty taking place within the ANC.
The assassination of Mchunu and others is a heinous crime against not only his person and his family, but also against the continuing marginalisation of some members of the ANC.
Mchunu spent his life fighting for a just society and the restoration of the values of fairness in the ANC. Consistent with this, he has been playing a central role in the common effort to unite the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.
During his very last days, he has been at the forefront of the campaign to end gate keeping and to encourage a spirit of tolerance among all members of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.
He is a martyr to the cause of justice and peace. His death demands of us that we pursue that cause with even greater vigour and determination.
At this moment of unbounded grief our deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and comrades.
