Comrade Zola Zembe, as he was fondly known within the ranks of our national liberation movement, was a trade unionist of note, a leader of the South African railway, harbour and laundry workers' unions and Cosatu's predecessor, the South African Congress of Trade Unions, as well as the World Federation of Trade Unions.
He was a member of the 1956 Treason Trialists and the Luthuli Detachment of the joint SACP and ANC military formation, uMkhonto weSizwe.
In memory of the stalwart of the of our struggle for liberation and social emancipation, the tripartite alliance needs to urgently move the national democratic revolution on to a second radical phase and reconfigure to uproot the systemic problems of inequality, unemployment, poverty and social insecurity afflicting the workers and poor.
