The South African Communist Party Linda Jabane (Johannesburg) District is saddened by the passing of ANC Greater Johannesburg Regional Deputy Chairperson comrade Connie Bapela. Comrade Connie passed away on Friday, 16 February 2018 after a short illness. The SACP conveys its heartfelt condolences to comrade Obed Bapela, the entire Bapela family, the community of Alexandra and the Greater Johannesburg.
Comrade Connie is a long standing activist of the Mass Democratic Movement and the ANC. Before 1990, she was an activist of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS), a founder member and leader of both Alexandra Youth Congress (AYCO) and Alexandra Women`s Organisation (AWO). She was one of the longest held woman detainee in the then Transvaal.
She has served the movement in various capacities including in the position of Speaker of Council in the City of Johannesburg.
