The South African Communist Party Gauteng Province has called off its demonstration against corporate capture of the State and the use of State resources to further narrow political interests. This follows the announcement by the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) that it has dropped charges of fraud against Finance Minister Comrade Pravin Gordhan, the former South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials Oupa Magashula and Ivan Pillay.
The province had obtained permission to demonstrate in Tshwane and had mobilised its structures to take a stand against corruption and corporate capture.
In our view the announcement is an alibi of a political witch-hunt against Cde Gordhan. It is proof that the charges were trumped up and aimed solely at his removal from the position of Finance Minister. Attempts at prosecution him, were about fatally weakening the National Treasury`s relentless struggle against corruption and corporate capture.
While we have decided to call off the picket, the SACP Gauteng will continue its vigilance and a courageous fight against the abuse of state institutions, including private or factional use of public power, corruption and rent-seeking.
