The SACP pays tribute to Raymond Louw on the occasion of his 90th birthday today for his ongoing activism in the cause of freedom of speech for all in our country and across the world

13 October 2016

Louw was courageous and highly respected journalist and, as editor of the Rand Daily Mail, fought tirelessly against the injustices of apartheid. As the SACP, we particularly acknowledge Louw's campaigning work to defend and promote the right of all South Africans to speak freely - even those with whom he disagrees, and that frequently includes the SACP. He is part of a proud South African tradition of fearless journalism that includes the late Percy Qoboza and Ruth First - our own Party leader who was murdered by the apartheid regime.
