Press statement in solidarity with dismissed SABC workers

19 July 2016

The South African Communist Party (SACP) expresses its sincere solidarity with the SABC workers who have been dismissed following the imposition of a draconian editorial decree by the bosses without regard to due democratic public consultation process: Vuyo Mvoko, contributing editor; Thandeka Qhubule, economics editor; Suna Venter, RSG senior producer; Foeta Krige, RSG executive producer; Lukhanyo Calata, senior parliamentary reporter; Krivani Pillay, SAfm executive producer; Busi Ntuli, special assignment executive producer; Jacques Steenkamp, senior investigative reporter.

The dismissal of these workers is a reflection of a structurally deeper administrative and governance decay that has now firmly "taken control" of the SABC and is unleashing adversity on workers to legitimise its dictatorship and silence a different point of view.

No working class party worthy of its name can be silent at this suffering imposed on workers and at the looting of the SABC as a public broadcaster away from the public!

The SACP says: "No to the terror against workers". The Party pledges to find ways to actively express its solidarity with the affected workers and deepen the struggle to save the SABC.

To all other workers who have not yet been unjustly dismissed at the SABC the SACP says: "An injury to one, is an injury to all".

To the public at large, the SACP says:

"The SABC belongs to all South Africans. Working together we can, and must, reclaim the SABC back and restore its mandate as a public broadcaster. We must do away with the administrative and governance decay that is destroying the SABC. We must bring to an end exploitation by parasitic elements and monopoly capital who are privately accumulating wealth and public power out of the SABC."
