#SABCmustNOTfall: SACP welcomes ICASA ruling

11 July 2016

The South African Communist Party (SACP) welcomes the ruling by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) ordering the SABC to withdraw its editorial ban of destructive aspects of protest action. The draconian censorship decree was a major editorial ban of an apartheid type. Unfortunately, it was a reflection of a deeper administrative and governance decay that is threatening to destroy whatever is remaining of the SABC, our public broadcaster.

The SACP reiterates its strong condemnation of the destruction of public property, regardless of whether such destruction occurs during or outside of a protest action or as a result among other things of administrative or governance decay. This condemnation by the majority of South Africans and indeed not only by the SACP is NOT a licence for anybody to reintroduce apartheid decrees in our developing democracy!
