10 July 2016
The South African Communist Party (SACP) congratulates the Polisario Front on the election of its new Secretary General and President of the Sahawari Arab Republic, General Ibrahim Gadi at its Extraordinary Congress held in Dakhla Camp on 8-9 July 2016.
We mourn in solidarity 40 days since the passing of their leader martyr Mohamed Abdelaziz and acknowledge his significant contribution towards advancing the struggle for independence of the people of Saharawi. President Gadi, who enjoys the overwhelming support of his people will undoubtedly take this struggle forward with the same degree of commitment, perseverance and selflessness.
The SACP calls on the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations (UN) to compel Morocco, which is colonially occupying the land of the people of Saharawi, to end the occupation and comply with all international agreements.
The AUC and the UN must intensify the implementation of the commitment by all roleplayers to conduct a referendum on the self-determination of the Saharawi people. Oppression of Africans by Africans cannot be tolerated!
The delay in conducting the referendum is inexplicable and unacceptable. We trust that the AUC and UN will step up and assert authority so that this matter can be expeditiously resolved with all the national and international rights of the Saharawi people fully respected!!
