The South African Communist Party in the Eric Stalin Mtshali District welcomed the judgement of the High Court which has sentenced two ANC councillors to life imprisonment for murdering a woman activist in KwaNdengezi Township. We have always attributed the deaths of activists in KwaNdengezi as political deaths linked to commercial racketeering. We must also congratulate the tireless efforts of the Department of Safety and Liaison the MEC Cde Willies Mchunu whom we have no doubt of his role to bring the matter of KwaNdengezi to its finality.
Also credit needs to go to the investigative officer, the whole unit involved and the police in general for the work they have done to bring the perpetrators of violence in KwaNdengezi to justice. The imprisonment of the two ANC Councillors followed a string of murders of which we now strongly believe they are in a process of being solved because the fear that was unleashed by the two will be seen as no longer a threat.
It is very interesting that one of the imprisoned was at the top of the list of candidates to be considered by the ANC. It was no wonder that the people of KwaNdengezi were protesting the imposing of this candidate councillor whom according to our understanding was supposed to be under suspension. We hope this is going to be a lesson to many similar situations that we have in the districts.
We are calling people to come forward with evidence of all the murders and volunteer those evidence to the police so that we bring the killing of people in KwaNdengezi to its end. Many people strongly believe that the killers of Cde Phansi are known but the people were afraid to come forward to volunteer evidence. We are also calling on the Department of Safety and Liaison and the Police to continue bringing peace and stability in the taxi industry in KwaNdengezi. We also expect the housing ownership challenge in KwaNdengezi will now be solved.
In conclusion, the SACP in the district is very disturbed about the political developments in the province which have got a huge potential to slide the province into political, social and economic instability. There appear to have a reckless handling of politics in the province. KwaZulu Natal has always been considered to be a very stable province after emerging from a highly volatile and violent era. While we were enjoying a stable government that are considered to be in the top 3 stable government in the province we are now hearing a very disturbing development in the form of possible recall of the Premier. While we recognise that the recall of any ANC Deployee is a prerogative of the African National Congress but once a person has been elevated to the position of the Premier who is elected by all Parties, immediately becomes an interest of all in the province.
We are calling for the Alliance Leaders to be responsible and direct all efforts to an overwhelming victory of the ANC and refrain from acts that are going to divide the movement and impact negatively on our campaign for the success of the ANC in this province. Our call is to unite and focus on the elections not to destabilize and be divided. This is what we are going to tell even our own Provincial Leadership.
