29 April 2016
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape condemns the irrelevant political grandstanding of the City of Cape Town Council chambers by the Democratic Alliance (DA). This opportunistic and absurd action by the DA caucus occurred during a normal sitting on 28th April 2016, the DA caucus took a decision to vote in favour of a motion calling for President Jacob Zuma to resign.
As the SACP, we view this move by the DA as an ongoing desperate attempt at undermining our democratically elected government. The DA continuously attempts to present itself as a champion and protector of the Constitution, this is a similar strategy of the EFF, both parties cannot comprehend Democratic Principles, and instead revert to court actions, allying with anti-ANC media houses and deepening racial, class and gender divisions in the coalition of regime change.
Yesterdays publicity stunt in council, a lower sphere of government, disregards the massive task at hand at addressing inequalities in the province, this is a clear abuse of tax payers money. The very same DA-led City that squanders precious time and money on populist election gimmicks are responsible for a housing backlog of over 500 thousand! Hundreds of thousands of indigent families fall victim to seasonal flooding in winter and shack fires in summer, this is also a City that has been ranked number one globally in terms of violent crimes. Clearly, transforming a City and province that faces such deep-rooted systemic and structural inequalities is not a priority of the DA.
As the SACP we wish to bring this reality to the fore, the DA`s portrayal of itself as protectors of the Constitution is a mere smoke-screen for the inequalities it perpetuates in the areas it governs. The interests of the poor working families in the City and Province, facing the ravages of winter are not the interests of the DA.
