JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) has strongly denied claims that it has registered to fight the local government elections in the Alfred Nzo municipality in the Eastern Cape.
This morning, African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe was quoted in the New Age newspaper claiming the SACP had registered to fight those elections, despite the ANC advising them not to.
Earlier this week, the communist party said the ANC had cancelled an investigation into the Guptas and state capture was a farce and a white-wash.
The SACP`s second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila says, "The SACP has not registered to participate in the local government elections, and I clarified that matter with deputy general secretary of the ANC about the Alfred Nzo district organisation which calls itself the communist party - it is not the SACP."
He says it`s wrong for Mantashe to claim the SACP was going to contest elections in the Alfred Nzo municipality.
Tensions between the two parties appear to have been rising through the week, after the SACP said the ANC`s cancelled probe into state capture by the Gupta family was a farce.
Mapaila says the ANC is not dealing with this properly.
"Even the emblem is not that of the SACP. It`s shocking that the secretary general of the ANC is quoted saying they are advisors. What advisors, because those are not our members?"
